Bring on 2008!

New Year’s Day has come and gone. You’ve made your resolutions and set your goals. Then whammo! The first weeks of work, urgent projects, family responsibilities . . . you are officially off the wagon before you can say ‘it’s only January’.

There is a difference between goalsetting and goalgetting. In this post we share insights from in-depth interviews with high-profile goalgetters. This is part of a regular blog article series which features high profile people, revealing what drives them and how they achieve their goals on a consistent basis.

This article will share their formula for creating significant positive change in their own lives, and offer some tips and techniques you can use in 2008.

Introducing this issue’s goalgetters:

·         John Banks
o   Auckland City Mayor, business owner in five different industries, father and husband
·         Christine Rankin
o   Former CEO of Work & Income, consultant, business owner (The Rankin Group), member of the Auckland Regional Council, regular TV and radio contributor, mother and grandmother
·         Gray Bartlett
o   New Zealand’s most famous guitarist, musical director, producer and concert promoter, former Auckland City councillor, career strategist for Hayley Westenra,Yulia and Elizabeth Marvelly),husband and father.
·         Peta Mathias
o   Successful chef, award-winning writer and broadcaster, presenter of TV1’s A Taste of Home, founder and creator of the 'Fête Accomplie Culinary Adventures in the south of France and Marrakesh.

What these people have in common – apart from big lives and even bigger goals – is an ability to ‘plug in’ to their own power source and keep recharging daily. Here, they reveal their personal strategies for achieving their goals on a consistent basis:

What Goalgetters Believe and Do

1.    Make the most of 24 hours. Have a plan, actively manage their time, but are flexible;
2.    Get rid of people with negative energy! Surround themselves with people who lift them up;
3.    Have big goals, which are also SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, results- focused and time-framed;
4.    Are willing to bounce back from failure at all costs. Everyone has setbacks – the 10 percent who bounce back and the two percent who persevere towards success reap the rewards and benefits;
5.    Are committed to their goals and understand the entailed costs, sacrifices and rewards;
6.    Are passionate to the point of bloody-mindedness;
7.    Aren’t worried about being politically correct, but are living their authentic selves;
8.    That money is not evil, but that the main thing is to add value to the people around them;
9.    Manage their emotions effectively to drive their ambitions. Our goalgetters are not afraid to use anger, elation or frustration to drive their success;
10. That balance is important in life – but these particular goalgetters have to work hard at this, because of their natural tendency to push themselves. Their lesson is to strive for balance, but understand you can’t have it all the time if you want to be at the top of your field;
11. See in their mind’s eye exactly what they want, and create action every day to get closer to this picture. They keep motivated by visiting their goals daily;
12. Are able to find things to be grateful for, no matter what the circumstance.

The Secret Formula

We have distilled the strategies into to a simple formula that you can apply to your own life:

                                                                                                                               DailyAction
Goalgetting Power = (Purpose+Passion+Preparation+Planning+Persistence+Pictures)
                                                            Obstacles

1.    Score each of your P factors out of 10 points
2.    Score your number and quality of personal obstacles out of 10
3.    Daily action factor multiplies your total score by 10
4.    Pictures refers to your ability to accurately visualise having already achieved your goals, and using that energy to drive daily action.

The higher your score, the closer you are to living your potential and achieving your goals.

How can you find the motivation and powers of visualisation to create action every day in your life?

For one thing, it means overcoming lethargy, procrastination and the ‘inconvenience’ of spending 10 to 15 minutes a day in creative and strategic time, to create the framework for action every day towards your goals.

www.livemygoals.com has developed a free, valuable online tool enabling you to copy some of the traits the best goalgetters possess. Its a new year! 2008 is the year of living your goals.

This morning presents another sunny skies day, with just a few wistful light fluffy clouds in an otherwise azure blue sky.

For the third time this year (in three days) we wake up to perfect conditions.

I always pictured running an International business from my laptop while travelling to exotic places and sharing the experience with my family.

Visualisation works, because that is exactly what I am doing.

What ever you can dream you can do - it's possible - just make a start and see it in your minds eye. Then create a little bit of action towards that vision each and every day.

The tide came in and the tide came out. Time to reflect on life,living and living my goals.

The day started with scrambled eggs, bacon on toast with fresh orange- followed by a walk in the countryside then - some fruit & nut chocolate a little later on.

The children are exploring the coves and beaches and I'm writing my first post for the year- living my goals in a heavenly spot near Cowan bay in Godzone, New Zealand.

One couldn't ask for more peaceful, perfect conditions to visualise and plan the next stage of living my goals.

I hope you are using this holiday time to maximum effect too.

Time to think in a concentrated, unfiltered, creative way.

We are fortunate in that we have just the breeze and the local bird life to interrupt our thinking.

For the second time this year, I do something I love - get on the water in a kayak.

I wish you all a clear thinking, creative & strategic 2008.

 On the 7th of this month, will see www.livemygoals.com interviewing Peta Mathias. The internationally acclaimed foodie. We'll investigate how she "plugs into her powerpack" and lives her goals. I can't wait to share it with you all.

Signing off from the waters...
